From the hills of the Verona side of Lake Garda and its hinterland come two wines: the Chiaretto and the Bardolino. The first is a rosé, the second is a red. They are both offsprings of the Corvina and, in smaller amount, of the Rondinella grapes native to the province of Verona. Both wines are characterised by a pleasant freshness and a great adaptability to the table. The production area includes the territory of fifteen municipalities (including Bardolino, which gives its name to the doc) located in the stretch of land that lies between the Garda, Mount Baldo, the river Adige and the river Mincio.
With its twelve million bottles, the Bardolino Chiaretto is the Italian leader in the sector of rosé wines with a geographical designation. Its history began in the second half of the nineteenth century, but with the harvest of 2014 the tenants of the Veronese Garda began what they called the "rosé revolution", choosing to produce a rosé with a very light colour and scents reminiscent of citrus, litchi, black currant, apricot, white flowers. To obtain a Chiaretto with these features, the grapes are subjected to a very soft pressing, as if it were a blanc de noir, or a brief maceration of the skins is carried out, this way they only release a fraction of their natural colouring. Perfect as an aperitif, with fish, vegetables, sushi and with summer cuisine, the Bardolino Chiaretto exists also in the sparkling Spumante version.
The Bardolino has a bright and delicate ruby colour with aromas of berries (especially raspberry, strawberry and cherry) and spices (cinnamon, clove, black pepper). Due to its characteristics, the Bardolino is easily accompanied by a very wide range of dishes: from the classic Italian cuisine to fish, from meat to cheese, from pizza to oriental dishes. The same territory also features the Bardolino Superiore, produced in small quantities, which comes from special selections in the vineyards.
